Yes! Personal Branding is absolutely critical!

From my recent niche pharma consulting experience, I find that my "personal brand" is often the reason why many seek me out for advice, consulting queries, and business opportunities.

In my current mode of reinvention, my personal brand is important because it helps me determine what my unique value proposition may be in a new field (microbusiness entrepreneurship), and how I may best contribute.

Finally - having a branding guru like Steve Woodruff as a colleague helps!

I agree with Ann and with you Steve. Trucking companies could use better branding. You are seeing big brands like the aforementioned using trailers as billboards. McDonald's is another that comes to mind.

Growing up as the son of a trucker (my dad owned a small trucking company for many years), I can tell you that marketing is not part of the trucking milieu or mindset.

Their concerned about delivering their load on-time and under budget and don't see that splashing a billboard across the side of the trailer as being a significant factor in building the bottom line. Plus, I suspect it's only the larger carriers that have marketing departments.

Still, it's something to think about to be sure.

"As a side note, someone could make a lot of money helping trucking companies come up with better names and logos."

Stuck in bumper-to-bumper highway traffic one day, I had a similar thought and entertained myself by creating new names and taglines for companies - not just trucking companies, but any company with a truck on the road. It was astounding, actually, the number of companies that don't use the space effectively.

Heres what I tell people "personal branding makes it cool to be you." They always get shocked because they were told that personal branding was always about image management, but hey, it's the exact opposite. The real way to succeed in life today is to be genuine, transparent, authentic and be true to yourself.

My father, a blue collar worker for 50 years of his life, taught me this. Your character bears more on who you are than your career.

He's a great man and everyone that has ever met him agrees with that assessment. He's no marketer. He knows nothing of branding or positioning. But he has the strongest personal brand I've ever seen.

So, it matters. It matters if your personal brand says "truthful." It matters if your personal brand says "unique." (and so-on).

Keep Cooking!

Excellent post Steve. I argue that our personal brand and the personal brands of every employee make up the company's brand image.

Hey Steve,

Great idea! Actually, the bot portion is not as much of a technical challenge as you might think. It currently exists in some of these Semantic apps like Twine by Radar Networks. I'm not sure if this logic is exposed yet in a way that could be consumed and used by your "dashboard" but I am sure this isn't far behind. You should check that out.

@JMac - when I look around as I drive, most of the trucks I see are unbranded (blank potential billboards), or branded meaninglessly with the trucking line logo. Even if a trucking company wanted to promote itself, it could do so on the back doors of the truck, and on the cab, leaving the huge sides for marketing something else.
As a side note, someone could make a lot of money helping trucking companies come up with better names and logos. Most of them are absolutely awful.

Okay Steve, so I am just seeing this post for the first time. You may recall I was triggered by you Uber app search (i think I tuned in at part 3). But this is the first time I have seen your visuals on the Social Media app.

If you are open do it, I'd love to get a copy of the PPT deck you show here and collaborate on the idea you are striving for.

I too have a project hatching that is similar. I also believe there is an uber app, or "viewer" that must be assembled. More than likely folks a bit more dev savvy will do the development. But we can dialogue and try to map out the problem/story and design request.

The project/concept I am working on is FFoFF. Or FriendFeed on FireFox.

Here is the challenge.
1/ FireFox 3 is the development platform and interface.
2/ The tools are widgets, social media sites, online apps, clouds of data and on and on.
3/ And FriendFeed is my current choice for uber aggregator of social content.

I believe we can iterate an Uber Interface (a VIEW) that will have amazing flexibility and require a ZERO DOLLAR dev budget.

My Firefox bookmark bar is already a sort of streamlined UI. It is not good enough, and constantly changing and evolving. But it is FREE.

Lastly, I am imagining several usage models that I'd like to solve.
1/ The uber social master VIEW
2/ BrainTraining and Teaching VIEW
3/ The newbie VIEW

That's it. Forgive me if I collect the comments I've left on your blog and begin a wiki page on VIEW development. I anticipate a fruitful dialogue as we continue our quests.

[and i really would like to get a copy of your ppt deck above if you're open to a creative commons kind of arrangement]
